Basic Data Gathering Surveys
What are they?
What does a selected population think about [fill in the blank with the topic or subject matter to be queried]?
Standard data gathering surveys, also referred to as polls, can help you answer questions about what people think about your product, customer service, organizational culture or climate, the possibilities are endless. Data gathering surveys are essentially polls, in other words the type of assessment most people think of when they think of a survey. As opposed to 360 surveys and team-based surveys, data gathering surveys tend to be one-directional in nature; i.e., respondents provide feedback on a topic but do not receive feedback from others. Respondents also do not provide feedback on themselves.

Typical Use
People often conduct data gathering surveys to better understand what customers like and dislike about a product. It's also common to survey people to better understand their thoughts on a given topic.

Strategy Mapping
What is it?
The Strategy Map is an organization-wide assessment that reveals details concerning the level of understanding and ownership of a given strategy across an organization. As an example, your organization's senior management develops a new strategy.
- How effectively has that strategy been communicated?
- What is the level of understanding of that strategy?
- Do I see how I can support it?
- Is there a sense of local ownership for the strategy?
- Has the communication been corrupted?
- Has it received appropriate middle management support and commitment?
Typical Use
A Strategy Map can be used to assess the effectiveness of a strategy within an organization. The results enable organizations to refine their strategies based on the merits of the strategies themselves.
Organizational Assessment
What is it?
Basically, an Organization Assessment responds to three key questions.
- How is the business doing?
- What is the business doing well?
- Where is the business not achieving what it would like and why?
An Organizational Assessment is an employee opinion survey conducted to reveal the organization's capabilities, opportunities for improvement, and possible risks. It can also help support investment, succession planning effort, and possible restructuring decisions.
Typical Use
Companies use it for collecting the necessary data to improve the organization's overall performance.
Course Evaluation
What is it?
A Course Evaluation is an online questionnaire that assesses the level of learning, teaching styles, and methods of a course. It can be used to rate the instructor's communication skills, enthusiasm, attitude toward the student, availability and the clarity of presentation, course difficulty, fairness of grading, amount of homework assignments.
Typical Use
The data is generally used in academic or corporate settings to guide instructors and institutions in improving their quality of instruction across different courses and departments.
Net Promoter Survey
What is it?
Based on the work of Bain Director Emeritus Fred Reichheld, the Net Promoter survey uses only one question that has a 0 to 10 rating scale which is then asked to all the customers. This method is likely to get a higher response rate than a more complete, but lengthy, customer satisfaction poll. The results from a Net Promoter Survey reduce the complexity of implementation and analysis frequently associated with measures of customer satisfaction, providing a constant measure of business performance that can be compared across business units and companies.
Typical Use
Companies often use this instrument to survey their customers to gauge customer loyalty and find actionable items via a follow-up open-ended question.
